WordPress 3.7 Released With Help from The Orion Group

WordPress Morning Coffee

Morning coffee by Shaun Janssens from wp-wallpaper.com

About a week ago, WordPress released the latest version of the most popular Content Management System on the web.  Version 3.7 was released and included a handful of nice updates both visible and under the hood.  Probably the most impactful update was the addition of Auto-Updates.  Going forward, all minor bug fixes will be automatically updated on WordPress sites.  Bug fixes, security enhancements, translations, and better password support were some other key additions to the release.

At Orion Group, we are proud to say that two of our developers, Dustin Filippini and Faison Zutavern, became first-time core contributors to WordPress in version 3.7. Continue reading

Admin Panel Tutorial – Pages

pages on the admin panelIn my last blog post, I went through an overview of the admin panel of WordPress.  In this post, I am going to dive into pages: how to add, edit, and delete pages, as well as additional possible functionality.  Each website that Orion Group develops is different.  Some options covered in this post may not be included in your website.

The Pages tab is located along the left side of the admin panel.  Pages generally has two subpages: All Pages, and Add New.  All Pages lists all of the pages, as well as some information about each page such as the Title, Author, Comments, and Date.  Add New allows you to add a new page. At the top of the page, it will show several links that allow you to look at pages with a different status: All, Published, Drafts, Private, and Trash. Continue reading

Orion Group and the WordPress Community

Here at Orion Group, we not only pride ourselves on great web designs and solidly coded development.  We like to give back to the community that supports us.  That is why we encourage our employees to regularly attend local Meetup groups and conferences.  Our staff has even been responsible for organizing various tech meetups and putting on the 2012 and 2013 WordCamp Milwaukee, a weekend long learning-fest focusing all on WordPress.

We like to be known as the leaders in the Milwaukee WordPress development community, which is why we make sure we stay at the forefront of all that is WordPress.  WordPress has been an invaluable tool and we feel we should give back to the cause.  Just this week, I participated in the weekly WordPress podcast, WPWatercooler.  We discussed providing WordPress support and the tools and techniques we use.  I learned a lot by participating and I hope others learn by watching.  Support is an important part of our job and although we have great tools in place to manage our support requests we are always looking to improve. Milwaukee WordPress Meetup: October 2012

The Milwaukee meetup group for WordPress convenes on the third Tuesday of each month. This meetup has taken place at numerous locations throughout Milwaukee. In more recent months it has found its home at Bucketworks, a collaborative/co-working space near the historic Third Ward.

The group is co-lead by Scott Offord, director or internet marketing at Orion Group, and Dustin Filippini, lead web developer at Orion Group.

This meetup focused on various issues regarding updating WordPress sites and keeping them safe from viruses and attacks, among other topics.

The evening’s discussion covered specifics like:

  • when to trust a plugin that might not be compatible with the latest core release,
  • how to go through the update process and
  • which variation of WordPress – the pre-installed content management system (CMS) or self-installed – will best suit a site builder’s needs. Continue reading
